Oxcarbazepine falls under Anticonvulsants — the group Andiroba interacts with.

Andiroba contains fatty acid amides that have shown potential anticonvulsant effects in animal studies. These compounds are believed to act as agonists at gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A receptors, similar to some anticonvulsant medications. Here's the honest picture: andiroba oil contains plant compounds that, in animal and lab studies only, seem to nudge the same calming GABA pathways in the brain that some seizure medicines work on. The thought is that pairing it with oxcarbazepine could, in theory, add to its sedating effects. If that happened, you might feel more of oxcarbazepine's usual side effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, or trouble concentrating.

That said, this is rated minor and unlikely, and the evidence is weak. Andiroba is also used mostly on the skin, and putting it on your skin is very unlikely to affect a medicine you take by mouth. I'd avoid swallowing andiroba while on oxcarbazepine, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Andiroba is an oil pressed from the seeds of an Amazonian tree, used mainly on the skin for inflammation, minor wounds, aches, and as an insect repellent. Most evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, so its benefits in people are not well proven. It is most often used topically; avoid internal use and use during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety has not been established.

What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
