ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Metformin XR

Metformin XR falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Atkins Diet interacts with.

Theoretically, following the Atkins diet might have additive hypoglycemic effects.
Following the Atkins diet while taking antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia. In patients with diabetes, low-carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins diet can reduce the need for antidiabetes drugs; monitor blood glucose closely.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: when you cut carbs way down on the Atkins plan, your blood sugar naturally tends to run lower. Metformin XR is already working to keep your sugar in check, so doing both at once can stack on top of each other and push your numbers down further than expected.

Now, the good news is that metformin by itself rarely causes true low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), so this is considered a minor and unlikely concern, and it's based mostly on expert opinion rather than hard studies. Still, if you eat very few carbs you may not need as much of your diabetes medicine. The smart move is to check your blood sugar more often and watch for shakiness, sweating, or dizziness. Loop in your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Metformin XR

This page covers Atkins Diet only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Metformin XR page lists 256 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate) and Agaricus Mushroom (moderate).

By severity: 2 major · 215 moderate · 39 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metformin XR page

“Siberian cocklebur stands alone at the top of this list; its seeds have caused severe low blood sugar in humans, and no one taking metformin XR (Glucophage XR) should use it. Almost everything else here, 239 of the 256 ingredients, affects blood sugar too, so this list earns real caution.”

About Atkins Diet

What is Atkins Diet?

  • Weight loss
  • Blood sugar control
  • Reducing carbohydrate intake
  • Improving certain cholesterol markers
  • Appetite control

The Atkins Diet is a low-carbohydrate eating plan that can help some people lose weight and improve blood sugar in the short term. Long-term results often match other diets, and the plan is restrictive and may not suit everyone. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you have diabetes, kidney, or heart concerns.
