Here's the gist: cutting carbs way down, like on Atkins, naturally lowers your blood sugar. Since Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is already working to bring your sugar down by making your kidneys flush extra glucose out in your urine, doing both at once could push your numbers lower than expected. That's the additive effect we're talking about.

To be fair, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on expert opinion, and dapagliflozin on its own rarely causes serious lows. The bigger risk is if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or confusion, and check your blood sugar more often if you start this diet. Don't change your dose on your own. Loop in your doctor or pharmacist first so they can adjust things safely.

What Is Dapagliflozin Used For?

Dapagliflozin is used for several serious conditions. It helps improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes (alongside diet and exercise). It also reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is additionally approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization, and urgent visits due to heart failure in adults with heart failure — and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, including reducing the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular death, in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of getting worse.
