Theoretically, following the Atkins diet might have additive hypoglycemic effects.
Following the Atkins diet while taking antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia. In patients with diabetes, low-carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins diet can reduce the need for antidiabetes drugs; monitor blood glucose closely.

Here's the gist: when you go very low-carb with something like Atkins, you're already pushing your blood sugar down through your eating. Stack that on top of canagliflozin (Invokana), which lowers sugar by helping your kidneys flush extra glucose out in your urine, and the two can add up. The concern is that together they may drive your blood sugar lower than intended.

To be fair, this is mostly a theoretical caution based on expert opinion, and on its own canagliflozin rarely causes serious lows. Still, watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy. Don't change your dose on your own. Check your sugars more often when starting Atkins, and loop in your doctor or pharmacist so they can adjust things safely if needed.

About Canagliflozin

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
