Here's the simple version: nateglinide (Starlix) works by nudging your pancreas to release insulin right around mealtime, which brings your blood sugar down. The Atkins Diet cuts carbs sharply, which on its own already lowers your blood sugar. Stack those two together and the effects can add up, so your sugar could drop lower than you expect. That's what we call hypoglycemia, and with nateglinide it can show up as shakiness, sweating, hunger, a fast heartbeat, or feeling lightheaded or confused.

The good news is this is considered a minor and unlikely interaction, based mostly on expert opinion rather than hard studies. Eating fewer carbs may simply mean you need less medication over time. Please don't change your dose on your own. Check your blood sugar more often when starting Atkins, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about adjusting things safely.

Nateglinide tablets are used to help improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is always used together with diet and exercise — not as a replacement for them.

Nateglinide is not for type 1 diabetes, and it is not used to treat diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the blood becomes dangerously acidic).
