Why this applies to Sertraline

Sertraline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear sertraline. In animal studies (using a similar enzyme), high doses of atractylodes appeared to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in people, sertraline could clear a little slower and build up slightly, which in theory might mean more of its usual effects, things like nausea, headache, drowsiness, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping.

The good news is this is very much a 'maybe' based only on lab and animal work, not real human cases, and it's rated as minor. Sertraline also isn't a prodrug, so there's no reason to expect it to stop working. Still, if you plan to take both, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up and watch how you feel.

Atractylodes is a root used for centuries in traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Thai medicine, mostly for digestive complaints and fatigue, often as part of multi-herb formulas. Modern research is still early and mostly from lab and animal studies, so its true benefits in people are not well proven. If you want to try it, talk with a pharmacist or doctor first, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Sertraline

What Is Sertraline Used For?

Brand name: Zoloft

Sertraline treats a range of mental health conditions. All formulations are approved for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The oral solution (including Zoloft oral solution) and several tablet formulations are also approved for panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

For OCD specifically, the capsule formulations and some tablet products are approved for use in adults and children aged 6 and older. Sertraline hydrochloride tablets (plain, not film-coated) are approved for OCD in pediatric patients as well. However, sertraline is not approved for major depressive disorder in children — only in adults.
