Bay Leaf and Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Bay Leaf interacts with whole categories of medication. Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Bay Leaf in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone

Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Bay Leaf interacts with.

Theoretically, taking bay leaf in large amounts may enhance the therapeutic and adverse effects of sedatives.
Bay leaf contains methyl eugenol. Animal research shows that methyl eugenol has sedative properties. Avoid concomitant use.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Hycodan combines hydrocodone, an opioid cough suppressant, with homatropine. The hydrocodone part already slows down your brain and breathing, which is why it can make you drowsy, foggy, or constipated. The concern here is simple: bay leaf contains a compound called methyl eugenol that, in animal studies, showed sedative (calming) effects. In theory, piling that on top of an opioid could make you extra sleepy or slow your breathing more than expected.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical worry based on lab and animal work, not strong human evidence. The pinch of bay leaf in your soup is not the issue. It would only matter with concentrated bay leaf supplements or essential oils. If you take those, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Hycodan combines hydrocodone, a narcotic cough suppressant, with homatropine. The concern here is purely theoretical: in large supplement-sized doses, some compounds in bay leaf are thought to possibly add to the sedating, calming effects of narcotics like hydrocodone. If that happened, you might feel more drowsy, dizzy, or foggy than usual, with slower breathing and possibly more constipation.

I want to be clear, though: this is based on pharmacology theory, not real cases in people, and the tiny amount of bay leaf used in cooking is not a worry at all. If you're thinking about concentrated bay leaf capsules or essential oil while taking this cough medicine, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can weigh in for your situation.
