Here's the gist with thiothixene (Navane) and bergamot. This isn't about how your body breaks down the medicine. Instead, it's about your skin and the sun. Thiothixene can already make some people more prone to sunburn, and bergamot essential oil contains a compound called bergapten that does the same thing. Use them together and you could burn faster or react more strongly to sunlight than you'd expect.

The good news: this concern is theoretical and tied mainly to bergamot essential oil applied to the skin, not the cholesterol-type bergamot you swallow. Sensible sun protection (sunscreen, covering up) goes a long way. If you'd like to use bergamot oil, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Brand name: Navane

Thiothixene capsules are used to manage schizophrenia in adults. The dose is adjusted based on how severe the symptoms are and how each person responds to the medication.

Thiothixene is not approved for treating behavioral problems related to dementia, and it is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
