Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) and Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

1 of 3

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with.

Theoretically, BMPEA might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA strongly inhibits CYP2D6.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the wrinkle with this combo. The codeine in your Anacin w/ Codeine is a prodrug, meaning it doesn't do much until your body converts it into morphine. The enzyme that does that conversion is CYP2D6. Lab studies suggest BMPEA strongly blocks that same enzyme, so in theory it could keep codeine from turning into morphine.

If that happens, you may get less pain relief from the codeine, since it can't fully switch on. On the flip side, BMPEA is a stimulant similar to amphetamine, and stacking it with the caffeine in this product could push your heart rate and blood pressure higher. This is theoretical and BMPEA is best avoided anyway, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, BMPEA might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA inhibits CYP3A4 by up to 37%.

This combo product mixes aspirin, caffeine, and codeine for pain. The piece worth watching is the caffeine, which the body partly clears using the CYP3A4 enzyme. Lab studies suggest BMPEA can block that enzyme by about a third, so in theory caffeine could stick around longer and hit harder. That might mean more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. Keep in mind BMPEA is itself an amphetamine-like stimulant, so stacking two stimulants is the bigger concern for your heart and blood pressure.

This is only a theoretical, test-tube concern, not something proven in people. Still, because BMPEA shows up unlabeled in some supplements and carries real heart risks, I'd talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

STIMULANT DRUGS

3 of 3

Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

Theoretically, taking BMPEA with other stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects.
BMPEA is thought to have stimulant effects, including cardiovascular effects such as hypertension, tachycardia, and cardiac arrest.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

The piece of this combo product that matters here is the caffeine. Caffeine is itself a mild stimulant, and BMPEA is an amphetamine-like stimulant. Stacking two stimulants together can add up, which is the concern on file. In theory, the pair could nudge your heart rate and blood pressure higher, leave you feeling jittery or anxious, or cause a pounding, racing heartbeat. The aspirin and codeine parts of this medicine aren't really involved in this particular interaction.

I'll be honest: this warning is based on how these stimulants behave on paper, not on solid human studies, so don't panic. Still, BMPEA is an unapproved supplement that regulators have flagged for real heart risks, so I'd steer clear of it. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate page

“Anacin with Codeine combines aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, and each of the three picks up its own supplement problems, so this is a list worth real caution. Just over half of the 398 ingredients here, 202 of them, can add to aspirin's blood-thinning action and raise bleeding risk.”

What is Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea)?

  • Weight loss
  • Pre-workout energy
  • Athletic performance
  • Appetite suppression
  • Mental focus

Beta-methylphenethylamine (BMPEA) is a synthetic stimulant chemically similar to amphetamine that has been found in some weight-loss and sports supplements, often without being clearly listed on the label. It is not an approved or well-studied dietary ingredient, and regulators have warned that it may carry real cardiovascular risks. Because of safety concerns and the lack of human research, it is best avoided.
