Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) + Imipramine
Imipramine brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM.
Imipramine falls into 2 drug categories that Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, BMPEA might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with whole categories of medication. Imipramine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Imipramine
Imipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA strongly inhibits CYP2D6.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with these two together. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down imipramine. In lab studies, BMPEA appears to block that same enzyme strongly. If that happens in real life, imipramine could clear more slowly and build up in your system, meaning more drug effect than you bargained for.
With imipramine, higher-than-expected levels can mean a faster heartbeat, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, or trouble with heart rhythm. BMPEA is itself an amphetamine-like stimulant that already nudges heart rate and blood pressure up, so stacking the two could be hard on your heart. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on lab data, not human studies, but BMPEA is best avoided anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Imipramine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA inhibits CYP3A4 by up to 37%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: BMPEA may slow down one of the liver pathways (called CYP3A4) that helps clear imipramine from your body. If that happens, imipramine could build up a little higher than expected. With a tricyclic like Tofranil, more drug in your system can mean more of its known side effects, things like a dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness on standing, and a faster or irregular heartbeat.
I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical, based on lab (test-tube) data showing BMPEA blocked CYP3A4 by about a third, not on real patient studies. But there's a bigger picture too: BMPEA is an amphetamine-like stimulant that can raise heart rate and blood pressure on its own, and imipramine can affect the heart as well. That overlap is worth taking seriously. Please don't change anything on your own, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Imipramine page
“Imipramine (Tofranil) is an older tricyclic antidepressant, and the supplements on this page deserve real scrutiny before you add one. Most of the list acts on the liver enzymes that process the drug, so an ingredient can quietly raise or lower imipramine levels: grapefruit pushes them up, while St.”

About Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea)
What is Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea)?
- Weight loss
- Pre-workout energy
- Athletic performance
- Appetite suppression
- Mental focus
Beta-methylphenethylamine (BMPEA) is a synthetic stimulant chemically similar to amphetamine that has been found in some weight-loss and sports supplements, often without being clearly listed on the label. It is not an approved or well-studied dietary ingredient, and regulators have warned that it may carry real cardiovascular risks. Because of safety concerns and the lack of human research, it is best avoided.
About Imipramine
What Is Imipramine Used For?
Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM
Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.
Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.

Natural Medicines records Imipramine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
