Meropenem, Vaborbactam falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Biofeedback interacts with.

There is some concern that electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback might lower the seizure threshold in some patients. Theoretically, combining EEG biofeedback with seizure threshold-lowering drugs might increase the risk of seizure.
Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the short version: meropenem (the antibiotic in Vabomere) is a carbapenem, and this whole family is known to slightly lower the seizure threshold in some people. The theory on file is that EEG biofeedback might also nudge that threshold a bit lower, so doing both together could, in theory, make a seizure marginally more likely. In real terms, that might look like twitching, confusion, or a convulsion, though this is uncommon and mostly a concern in people who already have a higher seizure risk.

I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical and not strongly proven. Vabomere is given in a hospital or clinic for serious infections, so just let your care team know you do biofeedback. Don't stop either one on your own.

What Is Meropenem and Vaborbactam Injection Used For?

Brand name: Vabomere

  • Meropenem and vaborbactam injection is used to treat serious urinary tract infections, including kidney infections, that are caused by bacteria. Meropenem is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria. Vaborbactam is in a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying meropenem.

  • Antibiotics such as meropenem and vaborbactam injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
