Meropenem, Vaborbactam falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Dendrobium interacts with.

The dendrobium constituent dendrobine is reported to have convulsant effects. Theoretically, combining dendrobium with pro-convulsant drugs might increase the risk of seizure. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with pairing Dendrobium and Vabomere (meropenem and vaborbactam). The meropenem part is a carbapenem antibiotic, and this whole family is known to slightly lower the seizure threshold in some people, meaning it can make the brain a little more prone to seizure activity. Dendrobium contains a compound called dendrobine, which in lab and animal studies has shown convulsant (seizure-promoting) effects.

Put them together and the worry, at least on paper, is an added bump in seizure risk. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on how these things behave in studies, not on real patient reports. Still, since you'd usually get Vabomere for a serious infection, it's smart to mention any Dendrobium use to your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Meropenem and Vaborbactam Injection Used For?

Brand name: Vabomere

  • Meropenem and vaborbactam injection is used to treat serious urinary tract infections, including kidney infections, that are caused by bacteria. Meropenem is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria. Vaborbactam is in a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying meropenem.

  • Antibiotics such as meropenem and vaborbactam injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
