Bitter Almond and Ziconotide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Ziconotide

Ziconotide falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Bitter Almond interacts with.

Theoretically, bitter almond oil may have additive effects with other CNS depressants.
Bitter almond and its oil contain amygdalin, which is hydrolyzed to toxic hydrocyanic acid. This can cause CNS depression and respiratory failure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Ziconotide (Prialt) is a powerful pain medicine given into the spinal fluid, and one of its known downsides is that it can slow down the nervous system. That can show up as drowsiness, confusion, dizziness, trouble thinking clearly, or even slowed breathing in serious cases.

Here's the concern with bitter almond: it contains amygdalin, which the body turns into cyanide, a true poison. In theory, that toxic effect could add to Ziconotide's nervous-system slowing and make those side effects worse. I want to be honest, though, this is a theoretical caution based on how the chemicals work, not real-world reports. The bigger issue is that bitter almond is genuinely unsafe to take at all. Please skip it and talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ziconotide page

“Everything on this page pulls in the same direction, which is why it warrants real caution. Ziconotide (Prialt), a non-opioid medicine delivered into the spinal fluid for severe chronic pain, is already known for drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion, and every supplement listed is a CNS depressant, meaning it can deepen that sedation.”

About Bitter Almond

What is Bitter Almond?

Bitter Almond
  • Cough suppressant
  • Muscle spasms (antispasmodic)
  • Itching and skin conditions
  • Flavoring agent
  • Sedative or 'narcotic' effects

Bitter almond is a variety of almond that contains amygdalin, a compound the body converts into cyanide, making it potentially poisonous. Because of this serious toxicity risk, bitter almond should not be eaten or used internally, and there is no reliable proof it treats any health condition. If you want almond's nutrition, choose ordinary sweet almonds instead.
