Black Psyllium and Haloprogin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Haloprogin

Haloprogin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a little wrinkle worth knowing about. Haloprogin is actually a topical antifungal cream (Halotex), so you rub it on your skin to treat things like athlete's foot. Because you don't swallow it, the fiber in black psyllium really has no realistic way to interfere with how it's absorbed. Psyllium's gel only affects pills and liquids moving through your gut.

The interaction on file talks about psyllium changing the absorption of oral medicines, and the evidence there is fairly weak and mostly theoretical anyway. Since Haloprogin works right where you apply it on the skin, I wouldn't expect any meaningful overlap. Still, if you're ever unsure about combining a supplement with any medication, a quick chat with your pharmacist is always a smart move.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Haloprogin page

“Haloprogin (Halotex), an antifungal applied to the skin for infections like ringworm, carries a supplement list that deserves genuine attention, one entry above all. Activated charcoal, the only major-rated interaction, adsorbs many medications and can cut how much reaches the body, even for drugs not taken by mouth.”
