Evidence from in vitro research suggests that boxwood extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and boxwood might decrease the effectiveness of boxwood or the anticholinergic agent.

Here's the gist for chlorpromazine (Thorazine). One of the ways this medicine works is by blocking acetylcholine, which is why it can cause dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, and trouble emptying the bladder. Lab studies hint that boxwood does the opposite, nudging acetylcholine levels back up by slowing the enzyme that breaks it down. In theory, the two could partly cancel each other out, so chlorpromazine's anticholinergic side might work a little less predictably.

I want to be honest: this is only test-tube evidence, not something proven in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, boxwood itself can be toxic and isn't well studied, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with chlorpromazine.

What Is Chlorpromazine Used For?

Brand names: Thorazine, Thorazine Spansules

Chlorpromazine is used to manage psychotic disorders and treat schizophrenia. It also controls nausea and vomiting, relieves restlessness and apprehension before surgery, and controls the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Other uses include relief of intractable hiccups, treatment of acute intermittent porphyria, and use as an adjunct in tetanus treatment.

In children ages 1 to 12, it is used for severe behavioral problems marked by explosive or combative behavior, and for short-term treatment of hyperactive children with conduct disorders. The oral forms are also approved for the management of manifestations of psychotic disorders broadly, in addition to the uses shared with the injection form.
