Trospium falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Boxwood interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that boxwood extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and boxwood might decrease the effectiveness of boxwood or the anticholinergic agent.

Here's the gist for your bladder medicine. Trospium calms an overactive bladder by blocking a nerve signal called acetylcholine. Boxwood, on the other hand, may do the opposite in the lab by slowing down the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine down, which leaves more of that signal hanging around. So in theory the two could work against each other, and you might notice Trospium not controlling the urgency, frequency, or leaks quite as well.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from test-tube studies, not from people, so we really don't know how it plays out in real life. Boxwood also has genuine safety concerns of its own. Before trying it alongside Trospium, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Trospium Used For?

Brand names: Sanctura, Trosec, Regurin

Trospium — available as tablets and extended-release capsules — is used to treat overactive bladder (OAB). It targets three main symptoms: the sudden, hard-to-control urge to urinate (urgency), leaking urine when that urge hits (urge urinary incontinence), and needing to urinate much more often than usual (urinary frequency).

Both Trospium Chloride Tablets and Trospium Chloride Extended-Release Capsules carry this indication. Your prescriber will choose the formulation that fits your schedule and health history.
