Hyoscyamine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Boxwood interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that boxwood extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and boxwood might decrease the effectiveness of boxwood or the anticholinergic agent.

Here's the gist for hyoscyamine (Levsin). This medicine works by blocking acetylcholine, the chemical messenger that drives gut motion, stomach acid, saliva, and bladder spasms. Lab studies hint that boxwood may do the opposite by slowing down the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine down, which leaves more of that messenger around. In theory, the two could partly cancel each other out, meaning your hyoscyamine might not calm cramping, diarrhea, or excess secretions as well as it should.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Boxwood itself is toxic and not something I'd recommend anyway. Before mixing the two, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Hyoscyamine Used For?

Brand names: Levsin, Levsin SL, Levsin Injection

  • Hyoscyamine is used to control symptoms associated with disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It works by decreasing the motion of the stomach and intestines and the secretion of stomach fluids, including acid. Hyoscyamine is also used in the treatment of bladder spasms, peptic ulcer disease, diverticulitis, colic, irritable bowel syndrome, cystitis, and pancreatitis. Hyoscyamine may also be used to treat certain heart conditions, to control the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and rhinitis (runny nose), and to reduce excess saliva production.
