Evidence from in vitro research suggests that boxwood extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and boxwood might decrease the effectiveness of boxwood or the anticholinergic agent.

Here's the gist for Tofranil (imipramine). One of imipramine's side effects comes from its anticholinergic activity, meaning it blocks a brain and body chemical called acetylcholine. That's what can leave you with dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, or a faster heartbeat. Boxwood, on the other hand, has lab data hinting it may do the opposite and raise acetylcholine levels by slowing the enzyme that breaks it down.

So in theory, the two could partly cancel each other out, possibly blunting how well imipramine works or how boxwood works. But honestly, this is built on test-tube research only, not real people, so the real-world effect is unclear. Boxwood also has genuine safety concerns of its own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Imipramine Used For?

Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM

Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.

Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.
