Disopyramide Phosphate falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Boxwood interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that boxwood extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and boxwood might decrease the effectiveness of boxwood or the anticholinergic agent.

Here's the gist with disopyramide (Norpace) and boxwood. Disopyramide isn't a prodrug, so we don't have to worry about flipping anything around. The catch is that disopyramide carries strong anticholinergic activity, meaning it blocks a chemical messenger called acetylcholine. Lab studies hint that boxwood extract may push acetylcholine levels up by blocking the enzyme that breaks it down. In theory, those two actions work against each other, so each might blunt the other's effect.

To be honest, this is based only on test-tube research, not on people, so the real-world impact is uncertain. Still, with a heart rhythm drug like disopyramide, I'd rather you not gamble. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Disopyramide Used For?

Brand names: Norpace CR, Norpace

Disopyramide — available as Disopyramide Phosphate, Norpace, and Norpace CR — is indicated for the treatment of documented ventricular arrhythmias, such as sustained ventricular tachycardia (a fast, dangerous heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers), that a physician judges to be life-threatening.

Because of its potential to worsen heart rhythm problems, it is generally not recommended for lesser arrhythmias, and it should not be used to treat ventricular premature contractions (extra heartbeats) that cause no symptoms. Treatment is typically started in a hospital setting.
