Diphenhydramine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Boxwood interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that boxwood extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and boxwood might decrease the effectiveness of boxwood or the anticholinergic agent.

Here's the gist with Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and boxwood. Diphenhydramine works partly by blocking a chemical messenger called acetylcholine, which is what gives you that classic dry mouth, drowsiness, blurry vision, and constipation. Lab research suggests boxwood does the opposite, nudging acetylcholine levels up. So in theory the two could partially cancel each other out, meaning your Benadryl might not work quite as well for allergies or sleep, and boxwood may lose its effect too.

I want to be honest though: this is based only on test-tube studies, not on people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than something I'd lose sleep over. Boxwood itself carries real safety worries regardless. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever, other upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold — including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

After Bite Xtra gel is formulated for topical use and is approved to temporarily relieve pain and itching from minor burns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, minor skin irritations, and rashes from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
