Umeclidinium Bromide falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Boxwood interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that boxwood extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and boxwood might decrease the effectiveness of boxwood or the anticholinergic agent.

Here's the gist with your Incruse Ellipta (umeclidinium). This inhaler works by blocking a nerve signal (acetylcholine) in your airways, which relaxes them and helps you breathe easier. Boxwood, at least in lab dish studies, seems to do the opposite by raising acetylcholine levels. So in theory the two could work against each other, possibly making the inhaler a little less effective at easing your wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness.

The good news is this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Umeclidinium is not a prodrug, so this isn't about how it's broken down. Still, boxwood itself can be toxic, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it.

What Is Umeclidinium Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand name: Incruse Ellipta

Umeclidinium Ellipta and Umeclidinium ELLIPTA (generic) are indicated for the maintenance treatment of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) in adults. This means it is used every day on a regular schedule to help keep airways open and reduce COPD symptoms over time.

This medication is not a rescue inhaler. It will not treat a sudden flare-up or acute bronchospasm. A separate short-acting inhaler is needed for those situations.
