Interferon Beta-1b falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Camphor interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of camphor with other hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
There have been a few case reports of transient elevations in liver enzymes in adults after oral or topical use of camphor. There has also been one case of hepatotoxicity in an infant after topical camphor use.

Here's the simple version: Interferon beta-1b (Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia) can occasionally stress your liver and bump up your liver enzymes, which is why your doctor checks bloodwork while you're on it. Camphor, on its own, has also been tied to a few reports of temporary liver enzyme rises. So the worry is just that two things hard on the liver, used together, might add up.

I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It's theoretical, based on how these things behave rather than solid proof. Used as directed on the skin in small amounts, camphor is unlikely to cause trouble. Never swallow camphor, it's toxic that way. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or belly pain, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before regular use.

What Is Interferon Beta-1b Injection Used For?

Brand names: Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia

  • Interferon beta-1b injection is used to reduce episodes of symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Interferon beta-1b is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It is not known exactly how interferon beta-1b works to treat MS.
