Ketoconazole falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Camphor interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of camphor with other hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
There have been a few case reports of transient elevations in liver enzymes in adults after oral or topical use of camphor. There has also been one case of hepatotoxicity in an infant after topical camphor use.

Here's the simple version: oral ketoconazole is one of those antifungals that can be hard on the liver, which is why doctors keep an eye on liver tests while you take it. Camphor has, in a handful of reports, also been linked to brief bumps in liver enzymes (after both swallowing it and, rarely, using it on the skin). The concern is just that stacking two things that can stress the liver might add up.

To be clear, this is a theoretical worry based on how these substances behave, not a proven, common problem, so I don't want to alarm you. Camphor shouldn't be swallowed at all. If you're using a topical camphor rub now and then, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can factor it into your liver monitoring. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and call your provider if those show up.

Camphor is a strong-smelling compound from the camphor tree (or made synthetically) that is used in many topical rub-on products for muscle aches, itching, and chest congestion. It can be helpful for these uses when applied to the skin in small, regulated amounts, but it is toxic and potentially deadly if swallowed, so it should never be taken by mouth. Keep camphor products away from children and check with a pharmacist before use.

What Is Ketoconazole Used For?

Brand name: Nizoral

Ketoconazole 2% shampoo and foam are used to treat tinea versicolor (also called pityriasis versicolor) — a fungal infection caused by Pityrosporum orbiculare (also known as Malassezia furfur), a yeast that naturally lives on the skin.

This infection creates light or dark patches, most often on the trunk, neck, arms, and upper thighs. Even after the fungus is cleared, those skin patches may take months to return to their normal color — that's normal, and depends on your skin type and sun exposure. Tinea versicolor can also come back, since the fungus lives on healthy skin even when there's no active infection.
