Interferon Beta-1a falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Camphor interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of camphor with other hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
There have been a few case reports of transient elevations in liver enzymes in adults after oral or topical use of camphor. There has also been one case of hepatotoxicity in an infant after topical camphor use.

Here's the basic idea with your Rebif or Avonex (interferon beta-1a): this medication can sometimes raise your liver enzymes on its own, and that's something your doctor already watches with periodic blood tests. Camphor, in rare cases, has also been linked to short-lived bumps in liver enzymes, even when used on the skin. So the concern is simply that two things that can stress the liver might add up.

I want to be clear that this is a theoretical caution based on how these substances behave, not a proven, dangerous combination. Interferon isn't activated or cleared by camphor, so this isn't about your MS treatment working differently. Used as directed on the skin, camphor is unlikely to be a big deal, but it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or neurologist since you're already monitoring liver health.

What Is Interferon Beta-1a Intramuscular Injection Used For?

Brand names: Rebif, Avonex

  • Interferon beta-1a intramuscular injection is used to treat adults with various forms of multiple sclerosis (MS; a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and people may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination, and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control) including:

    • clinically isolated syndrome (CIS; nerve symptom episodes that last at least 24 hours),

    • relapsing-remitting forms (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time), or

    • secondary progressive forms (course of disease where relapses occur more often).

  • Interferon beta-1a is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It works by decreasing inflammation and preventing nerve damage that may cause symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
