Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for anyone using Interferon Beta-1a (Rebif or Avonex) for MS. This medication can sometimes stress the liver, which is why your doctor checks your liver enzymes with bloodwork. The worry here isn't about how green tea is broken down. Instead, it's that concentrated green tea extract supplements have, in rare cases, also caused liver irritation. Taken together, the concern is that the two could add up and put a little extra strain on your liver.

I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical and based on scattered reports, so it's considered unlikely. Drinking green tea as a normal beverage is very different from taking high-dose extract pills. If you're considering a green tea supplement, run it by your pharmacist or neurologist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Interferon Beta-1a page

“Siberian cocklebur, an herb tied to documented cases of liver failure, is the first name to know for anyone injecting interferon beta-1a (Rebif, Avonex) for multiple sclerosis. Interferon beta-1a can strain the liver on its own, which is why prescribers order routine liver blood tests, and 38 of the 57 supplements on file carry that sa…”

About Green Tea

What is Green Tea?

Green Tea
  • Antioxidant support
  • Weight loss
  • Heart health
  • Mental alertness
  • Cancer risk reduction

Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
