In vitro research and case reports suggest that green tea inhibits drug efflux by P-gp, potentially increasing serum levels of P-gp substrates. Case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking green tea and certain P-gp substrates.

Here's the gist for fidaxomicin (Dificid). Your body uses a kind of cellular pump called P-glycoprotein, and fidaxomicin is one of its passengers. Green tea, mostly in concentrated extract form, may slow that pump down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more fidaxomicin linger in your gut, which is where it does its work fighting C. difficile.

The good news is that fidaxomicin stays mostly in the intestines and barely enters your bloodstream, so the usual complaints are things like nausea, belly discomfort, or mild vomiting. This warning is based on weak, anecdotal reports, not solid studies, so a cup or two of green tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you take green tea capsules, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Fidaxomicin Used For?

Brand name: Dificid

Fidaxomicin treats C. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) — a bacterial infection in the gut caused by Clostridioides difficile that leads to significant diarrhea and intestinal inflammation. Fidaxomicin tablets are approved for adult patients. Dificid (as tablets or oral suspension) is approved for both adults and children 6 months of age and older.

Because fidaxomicin works almost entirely inside the gut and is barely absorbed into the bloodstream, it is only effective against C. difficile and should not be used for any other type of infection.
