There have been a few case reports of transient elevations in liver enzymes in adults after oral or topical use of camphor. There has also been one case of hepatotoxicity in an infant after topical camphor use.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Nevirapine is one of those HIV medicines that already gets a close watch on the liver, since it can occasionally cause liver inflammation or even more serious liver injury, especially in the first few months. Camphor, the cooling ingredient in many rub-on muscle and chest products, has been tied in a handful of reports to temporary bumps in liver enzymes, and rarely to liver trouble.

The idea here is simple: stacking two things that can both stress the liver might add up. To be honest, this is mostly theoretical, based on how these substances behave rather than proven cases together. Used as directed on the skin in small amounts, camphor is unlikely to cause problems, but never swallow camphor, since it's toxic by mouth. Watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Camphor is a strong-smelling compound from the camphor tree (or made synthetically) that is used in many topical rub-on products for muscle aches, itching, and chest congestion. It can be helpful for these uses when applied to the skin in small, regulated amounts, but it is toxic and potentially deadly if swallowed, so it should never be taken by mouth. Keep camphor products away from children and check with a pharmacist before use.

About Nevirapine

What Is Nevirapine Used For?

Brand names: Viramune, Viramune XR

Nevirapine is used alongside other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection. It is not a cure, but it helps suppress the virus when used as part of a combination regimen.

The immediate-release tablet is approved for adults and pediatric patients 15 days and older. The extended-release tablet is approved for adults and for pediatric patients 6 years of age or older who meet a minimum body surface area requirement. The oral suspension is approved for adults and pediatric patients 15 days and older. None of these formulations should be used alone to treat HIV-1, and none are approved for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
