Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital
Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cannabinol (cbn) interacts with.
In vitro research shows that cannabinol potently inhibits CYP2B6 enzymes. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this one. Barbiturates like butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP2B6. In test tube studies, CBN seems to block that enzyme fairly strongly. If the same thing happened in people, your body would clear these medicines more slowly, so they could build up and hit harder than expected. That might mean extra drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, or feeling groggy and unsteady.
The important caveat: this is only lab evidence, and it has not been seen in actual patients yet, so it stays theoretical for now. Still, these are sedating drugs with a narrow safety margin, so I wouldn't combine them casually. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing CBN with any barbiturate.
