Sildenafil Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Cannabis interacts with.

Theoretically, cannabis might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the cannabis constituents delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol moderately inhibit the CYP2C9-mediated 7-hydroxylation of S-warfarin in a concentration-dependent manner. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP2C9 metabolism of tolbutamide; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down sildenafil (Viagra). Lab studies suggest that compounds in cannabis (THC and CBD) can slow this enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let more sildenafil hang around in your system than usual, which might nudge up its typical side effects like headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or low blood pressure.

The important caveat: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from real people taking both together, so it's far from proven. Sildenafil is also mostly handled by a different enzyme (CYP3A4), so any effect from cannabis is likely small. Still, if you use cannabis regularly and take Viagra, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you notice more dizziness or lightheadedness.

In vitro research shows that cannabis can inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 enzymes, which might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP3A4 metabolism of testosterone; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

Here's the gist with Viagra (sildenafil) and cannabis. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break sildenafil down and clear it out. Lab studies suggest cannabis compounds, especially CBD and CBG, may slow that enzyme a bit. If sildenafil gets cleared more slowly, more of it can linger in your system, which could mean stronger or longer effects, including headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or a bigger drop in blood pressure.

That said, this is theoretical and based only on test-tube research, not real-world patient studies, so I wouldn't panic. Still, since both can lower blood pressure and cause dizziness, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Sildenafil Used For?

Brand name: Viagra

Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.

Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
