Acitretin falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the short version for you. Acitretin already makes your skin much more sensitive to sunlight, so sunburns can happen faster and feel worse than usual while you're on it. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab studies, also appears to make skin more reactive to UV light. Stacked together, the theory is that you could burn even more easily.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's based only on test-tube research, not on real patients, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Eating cilantro in your food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cilantro supplements or the essential oil are where I'd be more careful. Either way, keep using sunscreen and protective clothing, and run any supplements past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Acitretin Used For?

Brand name: Soriatane

Acitretin capsules are approved to treat severe psoriasis in adults. It is typically reserved for patients whose psoriasis has not responded to other treatments, or when other treatments are not appropriate options.

Because of serious risks — including the risk of severe birth defects — acitretin is not a first-line choice. In women who could become pregnant, it should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks and strict pregnancy-prevention measures are in place.
