Cilantro and Nusinersen Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Nusinersen Sodium

Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that extracts of cilantro can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, cilantro might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's something worth knowing about this pairing. The interaction in our database is really about blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs, where cilantro might add a small extra nudge toward bleeding. The important point: Spinraza (nusinersen) isn't a typical blood thinner, even though it can land in that category in some databases. It does its job by helping your body make more of a protein your nerves and muscles need, and it's given as an injection into the fluid around the spinal cord (a lumbar puncture).

Where this could matter is timing. Spinraga's spinal injections carry a small bleeding and clotting risk on their own, and your care team usually checks platelets and clotting before each dose. Since cilantro theoretically nudges platelets, large concentrated supplement doses or cilantro oil could in principle add to that. Everyday cilantro in food is very unlikely to be a problem. This is based on lab data only, so please don't worry, just mention any cilantro supplements to your doctor before your next injection.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nusinersen Sodium page

“Spinraza (nusinersen) is given by spinal injection to treat spinal muscular atrophy, and it carries its own warnings for low platelets and kidney stress, which makes the 208 supplements on this page worth real vigilance rather than a shrug. All but six of them, 202 ingredients, could raise bleeding risk by thinning the blood or dulling…”

About Cilantro

What is Cilantro?

  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Antimicrobial support
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heavy metal 'detox' (chelation) claims
  • Culinary flavoring

Cilantro is the leafy part of the Coriandrum sativum plant and is widely eaten as a food, where it is considered safe for most people. While it has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in lab studies, strong human evidence for any specific health benefit is lacking, and popular 'detox' claims are not well supported. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil.
