Simeprevir Sodium falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist with cilantro and Olysio (simeprevir). Simeprevir is already a drug that can make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight, so people taking it can sunburn faster and sometimes get serious skin reactions. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab tests only, also seems to react with sunlight. So the worry is that the two together could add up and make your skin even more sun-sensitive.

I'll be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real patient cases, and normal cilantro in your food is very unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger question would be concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil. Either way, while on simeprevir, use sunscreen, cover up, and limit strong sun. Run any cilantro supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
