Here's the thing to watch with amiloride: it's a potassium-sparing water pill, which means it deliberately holds onto potassium instead of flushing it out. Coconut water is naturally loaded with potassium. Put the two together regularly and your potassium could climb a little too high, a state called hyperkalemia, which can cause symptoms like muscle weakness, tingling, or an irregular heartbeat.

There's also a small blood-pressure angle. Some early research suggests coconut water may gently lower blood pressure, so on top of amiloride you might feel a bit more lightheaded or dizzy. This is mostly theory and an occasional glass likely won't hurt, but if you sip coconut water often, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so your potassium can be checked.

About Amiloride

What Is Amiloride Used For?

Brand names: Midamor, Amilamont

Amiloride is used together with other diuretics (water pills) to treat congestive heart failure and high blood pressure (hypertension). It is added to a thiazide or similar diuretic to either restore low potassium levels or prevent them from dropping dangerously in the first place.

It is especially useful for people who are at particular risk if their potassium falls too low — for example, those taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems. Amiloride is rarely used on its own, as its diuretic and blood-pressure-lowering effects are weak compared with other diuretics.
