Ciprofloxacin falls under Quinolone Antibiotics — the group Coconut Water interacts with.

Many quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, may have reduced absorption when taken with calcium-containing products due to chelation. It is generally recommended to take quinolones at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after consuming oral products that contain calcium. The calcium content of coconut water varies by product but is generally between 100mg-300mg per 1,000mL. Consumption of a small amount of coconut water may be safe but it would be prudent to avoid drinking large amounts at the same time as a quinolone antibiotic. Here's the thing with Cipro and coconut water: the calcium that's naturally in coconut water can grab onto the antibiotic in your gut and form a clump your body can't absorb well. Pharmacists call this chelation. The result isn't more side effects, it's the opposite problem, you may absorb less Cipro than you need, which can let the infection you're treating linger or come back.

The good news is the fix is simple, it's all about timing. Take your ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before, or 6 hours after, drinking coconut water, and you sidestep the issue. A small splash probably isn't a big deal, but I'd avoid chugging a large bottle right alongside your dose. Run your routine past your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It's prescribed to treat bacterial infections in many parts of the body — including the urinary tract, skin, lungs, bones, joints, and digestive system. It's also used to protect against or treat anthrax and plague after exposure.

Because ciprofloxacin carries real risks, it's reserved for milder conditions like sinus infections, simple bladder infections, and flare-ups of chronic bronchitis only when there are no safer alternatives available.
