Here's the gist: there's a thought that coconut water might gently nudge your blood sugar lower, and since metformin is already working to bring those numbers down, the worry is that the two together could add up to too low a blood sugar (hypoglycemia). On its own metformin rarely causes low sugar, so this is more of a theoretical caution than a real-world red flag.

Honestly, the evidence here is thin. It comes from animal studies, not people, and the interaction is rated minor and unlikely. A glass of coconut water now and then is very unlikely to cause trouble. Just keep an eye out for shakiness, sweating, or dizziness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before making it a daily habit, especially if you also take insulin.

Metformin is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is always used together with diet and exercise, not instead of them.

Metformin hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are approved for adults and children 10 years and older. Metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets — including brands such as Fortamet, Glumetza, and Metformin Hydrochloride Extended Release — are approved for adults only.
