Coconut Water and Chlorpropamide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Chlorpropamide

Chlorpropamide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Coconut Water interacts with.

Theoretically, taking coconut water with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that coconut water might increase insulin levels and/or decrease blood glucose levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: chlorpropamide already lowers your blood sugar by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin. Some early animal studies hint that coconut water might do a little of the same thing, possibly bumping insulin up or pulling glucose down. Stack the two and, in theory, your sugar could dip a touch lower than expected, with the usual low-sugar warning signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy.

That said, this is weak, lab-and-animal evidence only, rated very unlikely and minor. A glass of coconut water now and then is very unlikely to cause trouble. Since chlorpropamide is long-acting and lows can sneak up, just keep an eye on how you feel and check with your pharmacist if you drink it often.

About Coconut Water

What is Coconut Water?

Coconut Water
  • Hydration
  • Rehydration after exercise
  • Electrolyte replacement
  • General wellness drink
  • Blood pressure support

Coconut water is a natural drink rich in potassium and other electrolytes that many people use for hydration, especially around exercise. For most healthy people it is a safe, tasty beverage, but it is not a proven medicine and should not replace medical electrolyte solutions for serious dehydration. People with kidney disease or those on potassium-affecting medicines should check with their pharmacist or doctor first.
