Why this applies to Esomeprazole, Naproxen

Esomeprazole, Naproxen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cubebs interacts with.

Several compounds isolated from cubebs can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this effect has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, cubebs might increase the effects and side effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. These include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Vimovo combines esomeprazole (a stomach acid reducer) with naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever). The concern here is purely theoretical: in test-tube studies, certain compounds in cubebs can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Esomeprazole is partly handled by this enzyme, so in theory cubebs could let a little more of it linger in your body. In practice, this hasn't been shown in people, and naproxen relies on different enzymes, so it's unlikely to be affected much.

The bottom line: as a kitchen spice, cubebs are very unlikely to cause trouble. With concentrated cubeb extracts or oils, just be a bit cautious and check with your pharmacist or doctor first. There's no need to worry over a sprinkle of seasoning.

Esomeprazole, Naproxen also falls under PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS (PPIs).

Theoretically, due to reports that cubebs increases stomach acid, cubebs might decrease the effectiveness of PPIs. PPIs include omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), rabeprazole (Aciphex), pantoprazole (Protonix), and esomeprazole (Nexium).

Vimovo combines two medicines: esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that lowers stomach acid, and naproxen, an anti-inflammatory for pain. The concern here is only with the esomeprazole half. There are some old, anecdotal reports that cubebs may actually increase stomach acid. If that happens, it could work against esomeprazole and make it a little less effective at controlling acid, so you might notice more heartburn or stomach irritation.

Honestly, this is a very weak, theoretical interaction, and a sprinkle of cubebs as a spice is unlikely to matter. Concentrated cubeb extracts or oils are a different story. If you take Vimovo regularly, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before using cubeb supplements.
