Here's the gist with Cyproheptadine (Periactin) and Deanol (DMAE). Cyproheptadine works partly by blocking acetylcholine, the brain and body messenger that controls things like nasal secretions and itch signals. Deanol is thought to nudge acetylcholine levels up. So in theory, the two could work at cross purposes, and Deanol might make Cyproheptadine a little less effective at calming your allergy symptoms, sneezing, runny nose, or itchy skin.

I'd keep this in perspective, though. This is a theoretical concern based on how the two are believed to work, not something well documented in real patients, and it's rated minor and unlikely. If you'd like to try Deanol while taking Cyproheptadine, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on whether your allergy relief seems to slip.

What Is Cyproheptadine Used For?

Brand name: Periactin

Cyproheptadine treats a range of allergic conditions, including perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis (year-round or seasonal nasal allergies), vasomotor rhinitis (non-allergic nasal symptoms), and allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, watery eyes caused by allergens or foods). It also helps with allergic skin reactions such as urticaria (hives) and angioedema (skin swelling).

Additional uses include cold urticaria (hives triggered by cold), dermatographism (skin that hives when scratched), and helping to calm allergic reactions to blood or plasma transfusions. It is also used as a supportive therapy alongside epinephrine after a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) has been initially controlled.
