Here's the gist: Citalopram (Celexa) is an SSRI that boosts serotonin to lift mood. DHEA isn't broken down by the same pathway, so this isn't about one changing the other's blood levels. Instead, the worry is that both can nudge brain chemistry and mood in the same direction. Stacking them together might, in theory, push things too far.

The main concern is overshooting into an elevated or manic mood, meaning unusually high energy, racing thoughts, irritability, trouble sleeping, or impulsive behavior. Honestly, this comes from a single case report and lab-level evidence, so it's far from a sure thing, and the risk may be a bit higher in younger people. Still, before adding DHEA, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Citalopram also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, DHEA might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some preliminary evidence shows that DHEA may inhibit CYP3A4; however, the clinical significance of this potential interaction is not known.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear citalopram. There's some early, hand-of-evidence that DHEA might slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does, citalopram could linger a little longer than usual, which in theory might nudge up its effects and side effects, things like drowsiness, nausea, headache, or feeling jittery.

I want to be honest, though: this is mostly theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal reports. Citalopram is not a prodrug, so it doesn't get flipped the other way. One real concern with citalopram is QT prolongation (a heart-rhythm effect), so I wouldn't combine it with a new hormone supplement without checking first. Please run DHEA past your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
