In a human case report, the use of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with DHEA caused a manic episode. Concern for this interaction may be greater in younger individuals with higher baseline DHEA levels.

Here's the situation if you're taking isocarboxazid (Marplan) and thinking about DHEA. Isocarboxazid is an MAO inhibitor, one of the older antidepressants, and it raises levels of mood chemicals like serotonin in the brain. DHEA is a hormone supplement that can nudge mood and brain chemistry too. The worry is that stacking these together could tip your mood the wrong way, possibly triggering agitation, irritability, trouble sleeping, or even a manic-type episode.

I'll be honest with you: this concern is mostly theoretical, built on lab work and a single case report involving a different type of antidepressant, so it's not a strong, proven link. Still, since isocarboxazid is a potent medication, I'd run any DHEA plans past your doctor or pharmacist first before starting it.

What Is Isocarboxazid Used For?

Brand name: Marplan

Marplan (isocarboxazid) is indicated for the treatment of depression — specifically, major depressive disorder. Because it carries serious risks, it is not a first-choice antidepressant. Marplan is generally reserved for patients who have not responded adequately to other antidepressants.

Clinical trials showed Marplan to be effective in adult outpatients with major depressive disorder, including those whose depression was accompanied by anxiety symptoms such as panic or phobias. Marplan is not approved for use in children or adolescents.
