Here's the gist with warfarin and DHEA. Some early lab signals suggest DHEA might slow down CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps clear warfarin. If that happened in real life, warfarin could build up a bit and thin your blood more than intended. With warfarin that matters, because it has a narrow safety window. Too much can mean easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious bleeding.

That said, this is theoretical and based only on weak, anecdotal evidence, so I wouldn't panic. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor first, and if you do add DHEA, ask about checking your INR a little more closely.

Warfarin already keeps your blood from clotting easily, so the worry here is adding something else that nudges in the same direction. Lab and some human research suggest DHEA can make platelets a little less sticky, which in theory could stack on top of warfarin's effect and raise your chance of bleeding.

In real life that might look like easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood in the urine or stool. I want to be honest though, this concern comes mostly from lab and animal-type evidence, not strong human studies, so it is far from certain. Since warfarin is a drug where small shifts matter and your INR is closely watched, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding DHEA rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

About Warfarin

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
