Eurycoma Longifolia and Estradiol, Progesterone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Estradiol, Progesterone

Estradiol, Progesterone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Eurycoma Longifolia interacts with.

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

If you're taking Bijuva (estradiol with progesterone) and thinking about tongkat ali, here's the honest picture. Your body partly uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help process estradiol. In a lab dish, tongkat ali root extract slowed that enzyme down a little. If that happened in real people, your estradiol could clear a touch more slowly and build up slightly, which in theory might mean more of the usual hormone effects like breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, nausea, or spotting.

The important part: this is only a theoretical, lab-based idea, the inhibition was weak, and it has never actually been seen in humans. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since hormone therapy is personal, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding the supplement.
