Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS
Why this applies to Phenobarbital, Sodium Nitrate
Phenobarbital, Sodium Nitrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Evodia interacts with.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of dexamethasone, a known CYP3A4 inducer, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly reduces the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to understand with this pairing: phenobarbital is a strong, well-known inducer of liver enzymes like CYP3A4, meaning it can speed up how your body breaks down other substances. In this case, the concern runs in the supplement's direction. Phenobarbital may cause your body to clear evodia's active compounds (evodiamine and rutaecarpine) faster, so you'd likely get less of whatever effect you were hoping evodia would provide. Phenobarbital itself isn't expected to become weaker or more dangerous from evodia here.
I'll be honest, this is based only on lab and animal research, so it's theoretical and not something to panic over. Phenobarbital is a serious medication, though, so don't change anything on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up before adding evodia.
