Ertapenem falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Milk interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of fermented milk.
Some fermented milk preparations contain live and active organisms, including lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains. Simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of these organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and fermented milk preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep straight: this interaction works in one direction only. Ertapenem (Invanz) is a powerful carbapenem antibiotic whose whole job is to kill bacteria. The live probiotic bugs in fermented milk, like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, are also bacteria, so taking them at the same time means the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of those helpful organisms. In short, the fermented milk could lose some of its gut benefit. It does not make ertapenem weaker or stronger.

This is a theoretical concern based on how antibiotics work, not a dangerous one. One practical note: ertapenem is given by injection, so timing food matters less here, but if you also use a probiotic product, spacing it a couple hours apart is reasonable. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

About Ertapenem Injection

What Is Ertapenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Invanz

Ertapenem injection (brand name Invanz) is used to treat moderate to severe infections in adults and children 3 months and older, including complicated abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without bone infection), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and acute pelvic infections such as postpartum uterine infection, septic abortion, and post-surgical gynecologic infections.

In adults only, Invanz is also used to prevent surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery. It works only against infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it — it will not treat viral infections.
