What Is Famotidine Used For?

Brand names: Pepcid, Famotidine, Pepcid AC, Famotidine Injection

Famotidine treats a range of acid-related conditions. Over-the-counter tablet products — including Acid Controller, Acid Reducer, Acid Relief, Amazon Basic Care Acid Reducer, basic care acid reducer, and Calmicid AC — are used to relieve and prevent heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach.

Prescription-strength famotidine tablets and oral suspension are indicated for active duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the small intestine), active gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers), GERD (acid reflux disease), erosive esophagitis (acid-damaged esophagus), and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The oral suspension is also indicated in children from birth onward for GERD and, in children one year and older, for peptic ulcer disease. Famotidine injection is used in hospitalized patients who cannot take medication by mouth.
