Flaxseed and Benazepril

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Benazepril

Benazepril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.

Theoretically, flaxseed might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that daily flaxseed consumption, especially for longer than 12 weeks, modestly reduces blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both flaxseed and benazepril (Lotensin) can nudge your blood pressure down. Benazepril relaxes your blood vessels, and studies suggest that eating flaxseed regularly, especially for more than 12 weeks, can modestly lower blood pressure too. Put them together and the effects could add up a bit.

For most people this is a mild, mostly theoretical concern, and a sprinkle of flaxseed on your oatmeal is unlikely to cause trouble. But if you take concentrated flaxseed supplements daily, watch for signs your pressure has dropped too low: dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, fatigue, or feeling faint. None of this means you should stop either one. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

“Benazepril (Lotensin) lowers blood pressure, and most of the 166 supplements on this page pull on that same lever, either dropping your pressure further or pushing it back up and undoing the drug's work. Six carry a major rating and deserve your attention before everything else, among them activated charcoal, which can soak up your dos…”
