Demeclocycline falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotics might interfere with the metabolism of flaxseed constituents, which could potentially alter the effects of flaxseed.
Some potential benefits of flaxseed are thought to be due to its lignan content. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a major lignan precursor, is found in high concentrations in flaxseed. SDG is converted by bacteria in the colon to the lignans enterolactone and enterodiol. Antibiotics alter the flora of the colon, which could theoretically alter the metabolism of flaxseed.

Here's the thing to understand about this pairing: it actually runs the opposite way from how most interactions go. Demeclocycline isn't being changed by the flaxseed. Instead, the antibiotic may blunt some of the flaxseed's potential benefits. Your gut bacteria are what turn flaxseed's lignan precursors into the active compounds (enterolactone and enterodiol). Since demeclocycline kills off a chunk of those colon bacteria, you might get less of that conversion while you're on it.

This is purely theoretical, based on how things work on paper, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Your infection treatment stays effective. If you take flaxseed mainly for fiber and regularity, that part still works fine. Just space it a couple hours from your dose, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

What Is Demeclocycline Used For?

Brand name: Declomycin

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride tablets are used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, tick fevers, respiratory tract infections (including those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae), cholera, plague, tularemia, brucellosis, relapsing fever, chancroid, and sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum, nongonococcal urethritis, and gonorrhea (when penicillin cannot be used).

It is also used for certain skin and skin structure infections, bartonellosis, granuloma inguinale, actinomycosis, listeriosis, anthrax (when penicillin is contraindicated), and as an adjunct in acute intestinal amebiasis. In severe acne, it may be used as part of combination therapy. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it.
