Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ESTROGENS
Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate
Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate falls under ESTROGENS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.
Flaxseed contains lignans with mild estrogenic and possible antiestrogenic effects. The lignans seem to compete with circulating endogenous estrogen and might reduce estrogen binding to estrogen receptors, resulting in an anti-estrogen effect. It is unclear if this effect transfers to exogenously administered estrogens.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest picture with your birth control pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Sprintec, and similar combos of ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate). Flaxseed contains plant compounds called lignans that act a bit like weak estrogens in the body. In theory, they could compete with estrogen at its receptors and slightly blunt estrogen's activity. If that happened with your pill, the worry would be a weaker effect, which mainly shows up as breakthrough bleeding or spotting rather than reliable cycle control.
The key word is theoretical. This idea comes from how flaxseed behaves in the lab, not from real cases of birth control failing. Eating flaxseed as a food is very unlikely to matter. Still, since this is contraception, please run concentrated flaxseed supplements by your pharmacist or doctor first.
