Flaxseed and Pindolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Pindolol

Pindolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.

Theoretically, flaxseed might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that daily flaxseed consumption, especially for longer than 12 weeks, modestly reduces blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: flaxseed and pindolol can both nudge your blood pressure downward, so together they may add up. Pindolol already relaxes your blood vessels and slows your heart, and studies show that taking flaxseed daily (especially for more than 12 weeks) can modestly lower blood pressure on its own. Stacked together, your reading could dip a bit lower than expected.

If your blood pressure goes too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or faint when you stand up quickly. This is only a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not a proven, dangerous reaction, and a sprinkle of flaxseed on your oatmeal is unlikely to matter. Still, if you're using concentrated flaxseed supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pindolol page

“People prescribed pindolol (Visken), a beta-blocker, are usually treating high blood pressure, and they are often the very people drawn to heart-friendly supplements like fish oil. That overlap is why this list of 183 ingredients deserves genuine care, starting with the five rated major.”
