Garcinia and Cablivi

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Cablivi

Cablivi falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
HCA inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. The inhibitory effect seems to be greater in platelets extracted from diabetic subjects than non-diabetic subjects.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Cablivi (caplacizumab) already works to prevent the kind of blood clotting that happens in aTTP, so its main known risk is bleeding. That can show up as nosebleeds, bruising more easily, bleeding gums, or heavier bleeding from cuts. Garcinia's active compound, hydroxycitric acid, has slowed down platelet clumping in lab dishes, so the worry is that adding it on top of Cablivi could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern, based on test-tube findings rather than real patient reports. Still, because you're being treated for a serious bleeding-and-clotting disorder, this isn't the time to experiment. Please run any Garcinia or weight-loss supplement past your doctor or pharmacist first, and watch for unusual bleeding or bruising.
